Two Kentucky Civil War Circulars signed-in-type by Simon Bolivar Buckner as Inspector General. Includes: one circular (1p. octavo) entitled, HEADQUARTERS KENTUCKY STATE GUARD, Louisville, with the date "November 6, 1860" crossed out and "June 1, 1861" penned over it. This circular pertaining to company returns. The second circular is a Confederate imprint (1p. octavo) entitled, HEADQUARTERS KENTUCKY STATE GUARD, Louisville, June 21, 1861, with more information regarding returns.

From the Kentucky Encyclopedia on S.B. Buckner: Simon Bolivar Buckner, governor of Kentucky during 1887-91, was born at Glen Lily, the family estate near Munfordville, Kentucky, on April 1, 1823. When his parents, Aylett Hartswell and Elizabeth Ann (Morehead) Buckner, moved to Arkansas, they left him behind to attend schools in Greenville and Hopkinsville before he entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1840. Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
